Project General Melchett: Stage 2.
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007As the 8800GT is on backorder, time to borrow Liam's old ATI Radeon 1950Pro and start the installation process. Also a good time to clean up the cables a little inside.
Good news. General Melchett boots. BIOS finds all the hardware bit first time around. The CPU is not fried.

ZDNet’s George Ou’s Build-at-Home Projects
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007After building my second PC, I think this is the way to go.
Mix-and-match your own components. Careful thinking through the best pieces to optimise performance or cost. The pleasure in knowing your own blood, sweat and tears stain the inside of the case.
Oh, scratch that last one. There were no tears.
Go read about George Ou's [...]

Rootin’ Tootin’ Luton Tapes: Split Enz
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007In 1978 Split Enz were stuck in the UK, between albums, managers and recording labels.
For many years, hard core Split Enz fans heard the odd song from this period: Serge (Once in Rome), Next Exit. Semi Detached. Some songs were released as B-sides. Others just made it onto other albums over time.
Fans heard from various [...]
Project General Melchett. Stage 1.
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007Project General Melchett is my own, roll your own, home built Intel Core 2 Quad box for home.
Ordered yesterday, and delivered in pieces yesterday. Started the build at 10.30am and completed major parts at 1.00pm.
A big part of the decision process was should I install a new 45nm Quad Core Extreme. The current price difference [...]

On Being Disconnected from the Twitter Hive-Mind
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007For various reasons: some in my control, and many out of my control: I just decided to stop twittering for a week. Turned off any interruption based service: Live Messenger, Office Communicator 2007. Even restricting the outgoing emails.
A couple of days sick where I virtually disconnected. Then I went to Adelaide to visit the family. [...]
